Latin Atmosphere Ignites Madrid: Atletico Fans Intimidate Arsenal on a Fiery European Night
Thursday 30-04-2026
The Atletico Madrid fans turned the Metropolitano Stadium into something resembling Argentine stadiums during their match against Arsenal in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final, creating an exceptional reception for the team before the match began, amidst an unusually enthusiastic atmosphere for European stadiums.

The fans threw hundreds of rolls of paper onto the pitch as the players entered, in a scene reminiscent of historic moments from Argentine football stands. It also reminded the Rojiblancos fans of a famous image from when the team played in the second division against Real Betis in the past.

The heated atmosphere extended outside the stadium as well, with fans gathering on Arsentales Street to welcome the team bus, a tradition that has become synonymous with major matches for coach Diego Simeone's team. The fans continued their support throughout the match despite Arsenal taking the lead with a penalty goal scored by Viktor Gyökeres.

The stands did not calm down even after the equalizing goal scored by Julian Alvarez from the penalty spot. Instead, the crowd pressure on referee Danny Makkelie increased when he returned to the video technology to review another penalty for Arsenal, before retracting his decision amid an explosion of joy in the stands.
