Arbeloa: I Will Understand the Club's Decision, But I Don't Understand the Referee's Decision
Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa appeared in a press conference following the elimination from the UEFA Champions League after losing 4-3 to Bayern Munich in the second leg of the quarter-finals, noting that the first leg ended with a 2-1 win for Bayern.
The coach said: "I am very proud of them, the fans, everyone who traveled to support us, those who watched from home, and the club. If there's something that hurts me in this defeat, it's that this year we won't achieve the sixteenth title, especially in the manner it happened."
He added: "I believe I fielded the best possible team to win. We needed to come here to win, I couldn't come to dribble, I wanted to score goals. I knew Bayern, with their style, would make us suffer, so I also wanted to force them to worry defensively and come out with players capable of overcoming this strong pressure and man-to-man. I would repeat the same choices again, and I would field the same formation. The players made a great effort and showed strong character in this stadium against a great team. In the second half, we knew we would need to hold on, and it's unfortunate we didn't capitalize on the chances because football is decided by effectiveness in front of the goal."
He explained: "The locker room is very hurt, especially because of the manner. From here I congratulate Bayern Munich on the great match they presented, but we would have preferred to lose in a different way. There is a feeling of injustice and anger because all the work and sacrifices the players made went due to a refereeing decision that no one understands (Camavinga's expulsion)."
He continued: "I think the referee showed the card because of Bayern players' protests, as they went to tell him it was the second card. Sometimes it seems referees don't play football or don't understand how to handle these situations. But worse than that, he doesn't realize he gave a card shortly before, especially since Camavinga came in the second half, and this is a double mistake."
He added: "I don't know if anything positive can be extracted now. As I always said, I am responsible for the defeats and I will always bear the consequences. The fans should be proud of their players because they gave everything and showed great character. Since I sat on this bench, I have always tried to help the club, not in the way I want, but in the way I can. From now on, we have some matches left, and we will continue to defend this badge as much as possible, as the players did today."
He continued: "Since I sat on this bench, my goal was not to prove my level as a coach. I didn't want to win matches with my decisions, but with the help of the players on the field. We faced great teams like Bayern Munich led by Kompany, Manchester City led by Guardiola, and Atlético Madrid led by Simeone. Most teams have a clear imprint of their coaches, and I don't know how much my imprint is on this team, maybe less than others. But I have always tried to help the club, and that will continue until the last day."
He concluded about his future: "I am not concerned about my future at all, and I will understand any decision the club makes. I am a man of the club, and if I am sad today, it is not for myself, but for Real Madrid. I feel sad for the players, the club, and the fans, not for myself. My future doesn't worry me. Since I sat here, this matter has not been a concern for me. I just want Real Madrid to win, regardless of who is on the bench."
