Referees Committee: Mbappe Deserves a Penalty Against Girona
The referees' technical committee revealed its stance on not awarding a penalty in favor of Kylian Mbappe in the match between Real Madrid and Girona, part of the 31st round of the Spanish League, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Kylian Mbappe fell in the 88th minute inside the penalty area after receiving a blow to the face from a Girona player, causing him to bleed and requiring medical attention. However, the referee did not call anything, nor did the video assistant referee intervene.
The spokesperson for the referees' technical committee said: "This incident can be interpreted in more than one way. It can be considered a result of natural contact during movement."
He added, "The referee made his decision based on his judgment and chose to continue the play, but the intervention can be considered reckless because there was a hit to the face, where the outstretched arm carelessly collided with the opponent's face and caused an obstruction."
He concluded: "The referees' technical committee considers it a situation that can be counted as a penalty kick."
Nevertheless, the committee did not definitively confirm the necessity of awarding a penalty kick, as it did in other cases, but it emphasized a clear point: "The video referee acted correctly by not intervening," because the situation is considered subjective and not a clear and obvious error that requires review.
