Carrick: Martinez's Expulsion Was the Worst Refereeing Decision I've Ever Seen
Manchester United coach Michael Carrick spoke in a press statement following the 2-1 loss against Leeds United in the 32nd round of the English Premier League, at Old Trafford.
The coach said in his speech: "We didn't start the match well. We conceded a clear goal when Lenny Euro received a strong elbow hit to the back of his head, allowing them to score the first goal."
He added, "They did not decide to cancel that decision... It was a decisive moment in the match. We were not at our best, and we were not in sync. We had some good moments, but we were not at our best for most of the first half."
He continued: "But in the second half, I believe the players, with the way they handled the game, maintained their positivity and fought to achieve a positive result after another shocking decision to send off [Lisandro Martinez]. Two consecutive matches we faced similar decisions against us, but this decision was one of the worst I have ever seen in my life."
Regarding Lisandro Martinez's expulsion for pulling Lewin's head: "Lenny Euro was hit with an elbow in the first goal, with your arm bent of course. Lisandro Martinez also got hit in the face, and when he lost his balance because of it, he was trying to hold on, and he touched the back of his hair with the tip of his hand, which caused the hair tie to come off. I don't even know how it looked. It wasn't a pull, nor a tug, nor an aggressive act. He just touched it, and then he was sent off."
He concluded: "It was a clear and obvious mistake (by the referee), a shocking matter."
