Arbeloa: We Haven't Lost La Liga Yet, and We Have Confidence in a Comeback Against Bayern Munich
Saturday 11-04-2026
Álvaro Arbeloa, the Real Madrid coach, spoke at the press conference at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium following the 1-1 draw against Girona in the 31st round of La Liga. He commented on several issues, most notably the controversial refereeing incident.

The coach commented on Mbappe's penalty in the 88th minute: "For me, it's a penalty here and on the moon as well. It's another incident, and a new week. This is the reality. I don't understand, and I think no one understands when VAR intervenes. It seems to intervene when it suits and ignores it at other times. These situations reinforce my opinion. For me, the incident is very clear. A foul was called on Mbappe that was less clear than this case. We suffered a lot with the refereeing, and with this referee specifically last week in Mallorca, the same things always repeat."

He added: "I leave feeling that although the match wasn't our best, we should have won. Considering the number of chances we created and the few opportunities we allowed Girona, we had a strong enough lineup to win. The players' performance gave us chances that we should have scored more from, but that didn't happen, and we leave with a draw."

Regarding the effectiveness of Vinicius and Mbappe: "I can't worry about players with these numbers. They are certainly among the top four or five players in the world. I don't feel any concern. We need to improve collectively in many aspects, especially against teams that retreat and close spaces. This still causes us difficulty, and I believe it's more related to collective performance than individual. We hope this difficult period ends on Wednesday and we become more effective in front of the goal."

He continued: "Did the referee provide an explanation for what happened in the Mbappe incident? No, he did not provide any explanation at all."

Regarding the match against Bayern Munich: "We will now focus on Wednesday's game. We have to put in a great effort and prepare well. We have more time compared to the first leg to analyze what happened and correct the mistakes. We will try to improve what we didn't do well and enhance what we did right. We know that Wednesday's match is ours, and we must put all our energy into it. We will go to Germany to win, and we are convinced of that and ready to fight there."

Regarding whether Real Madrid has lost the title race: "No, I will feel that way the day we actually lose it. As long as we haven't lost it, we will continue to fight. And if we lose it one day, we must continue to defend the club's emblem and present the best image. This is Real Madrid, and we must fight until the last day."

Regarding Camavinga's participation instead of Tchouameni: "I wanted to see Camavinga in this position, as he has played there against Villarreal before. He feels comfortable in the holding midfield role, which is where he performs at his best. It was important for me to see him there and understand what I want from him, both in positioning and movement. He is a player who moves a lot, but in this position, he needs to position himself differently to help in building play and defending. I think it was a good choice to start with him today."

Regarding Bellingham and his position against Bayern: "We'll see on Wednesday. Bellingham performed well, he was active and confident. It's natural for him to feel some fatigue after the break. This was his first start, but it was beneficial for him to regain his rhythm. We are very pleased with what he offered because he gives the team a lot. It was a positive match for him."

Regarding the reasons for the negative results: "Simply because we didn't win. As I always say, we need to give 200% of our level to win. We are not a team that always wins at 90% of our level. If you want to ensure victory, especially against teams that are weaker than you, you have to give your utmost. Otherwise, surprises will happen, as is currently happening with us frequently."

Regarding the fans' belief in a comeback against Bayern: "I just want my team players to believe in me. I am confident that the 25 players we will take there will be convinced of our ability to win. In Munich, they think they are the favorites because of the result and their stadium, but they will face Real Madrid, and we will deliver a great match."

He concluded: "Dani Carvajal? There are many discussions I don't get involved in. I have a large number of players in different positions, and this is a great advantage. Internal competition raises the level of the players. I am very happy with what Carvajal is offering; he is improving daily in terms of rhythm and readiness, and he has been delivering more complete matches recently. I am very happy with him."
