FIFA Announces Implementation of Wenger's Law in the Canadian League
Tuesday 31-03-2026
FIFA announced the start of testing the new offside rule, popularly known as the "Arsène Wenger Rule," after making some amendments to it. This will take place in the Canadian Premier League starting from April 4th.

The new amendment aims to make offside decisions clearer and encourage offensive play, following significant controversy surrounding offside decisions in recent years, especially with the use of video assistant referee technology.

According to the new law, an attacking player will not be considered offside if at least one part of their body, which can be legally used to score a goal (excluding the hands or arms), is level with the last defender.

Offside will only be counted when the attacker is completely beyond the second-to-last defender with a clear distance between them, meaning that any slight overlap between the players will not be considered offside.

FIFA hopes that this amendment will contribute to increasing offensive opportunities and improving the pace of matches by giving greater advantage to attackers and reducing controversial offside decisions.
