The newspaper 'Mundo Deportivo' revealed that the Union of European Football Associations imposed sanctions on Benfica due to the racist insults directed at Vinicius Junior during the match against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

According to the decision, Benfica was fined 40,000 euros due to illegal chants and gestures from some of its fans, along with an additional fine of 25,000 euros for throwing projectiles during the match held at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon on February 17.

UEFA also decided to place the Portuguese club under surveillance for a year, with a suspended decision to partially close the stadium, which includes 500 seats in stands 10 and 11, to be enforced if the same violations are repeated in the future.

The sanctions also included suspending assistant coach Pedro Luis Ferreira Machado for one match in European competitions due to unsporting behavior, while Benfica had taken internal measures by suspending five fans following racist actions that appeared in television footage after the match, which ended with Real Madrid winning 1-0.

In a related context, UEFA continues its investigations regarding the incident involving player Gianluca Prestianni, accused of directing a racist insult at Vinicius Junior, an incident that caused the match to stop for about 10 minutes after the Brazilian player reported the incident to the referee following his goal celebration in front of Benfica fans.

Despite Prestianni denying these accusations, he was temporarily suspended from the return match in Madrid, which ended with a Real Madrid victory, with the investigation ongoing and the possibility of him facing a penalty that could extend to a 10-match suspension in European competitions.
