Carrick: Facing Aston Villa is a Strong Test, and This is My Response to Scholes
Friday 13-03-2026
The interim manager of Manchester United, Michael Carrick, spoke about his team's preparations for facing Aston Villa in the English Premier League on Sunday, in the 30th round of the competition.

Carrick said in his speech: "Aston Villa was always going to be a strong test. I understand that the first loss feels different, but it was bound to happen at some point. Most teams go through something like this during the season."

The coach added in his speech: "In some aspects, it was a good week for us because we have put ourselves in a position where there is much to play for."

He continued his discussion about the loss against Newcastle, saying: "The way the match ended was disappointing, but we analyzed what happened and learned from it. We trained very well this week, and the players are eager to get back into competition."

Regarding the criticisms directed at him by his former colleague Paul Scholes on social media: "It wasn't really a big deal. On social media, headlines and quotes can be interpreted in different ways, so they should be handled calmly. There are multiple opinions, and sometimes things get blown out of proportion. It is what it is, and I'm not worried about it. I don't want to make it a big issue."

Regarding the team's condition: "Mason Mount has returned to training with the group, which is great. He is an important player for us. Of course, he hasn't reached full fitness yet, as he has only trained for a short period, but his return is good news, and we'll see if he will participate on Sunday."

He concluded: "Harry Maguire is performing well, and this is evident. For a while, he wasn't playing due to a long-term injury, so we have been managing his physical condition cautiously over the past weeks. Maguire has demonstrated his experience once again and has put himself back in consideration for the England national team if he had been out of it before."
