Valverde: Our Plan Succeeded, and the Return Match Will Be Difficult
Thursday 12-03-2026
Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde appeared in a press statement following the 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16, held at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

The star of the match said in his interview: "A wonderful night, an unbelievable night, nights like these are what you dream of. I would like to thank my teammates for their trust, the coaching staff, and the fans despite the difficulties of the season."

He added, "Is this your best match? Yes, definitely, especially in terms of goals. I really enjoyed it. I haven't felt such enjoyment in a long time. I'm very happy with the team's victory."

He continued, "This is what I'm trying to do (attack), and this is what the coach asks of me, to move from midfield to attack. Today we had more players to control the ball, and I tried to attack more. My teammates passed me some great passes, I thank them very much."

Regarding the game plan: "We practiced it a lot, especially goal kicks. They press us man-to-man, and there was space behind them to run. We are fast, and the plan worked."

He emphasized: "We must act as brothers, defend each other, support each other, and stand by each other. You can see the team's cohesion when it is united. If we work together, we can achieve great accomplishments. We were tired in the final minutes, but the team kept going."

Regarding Vinicius Junior missing the penalty: "The most important thing is the team's work and the effort put in."

Regarding the second leg: "Matches there in Manchester are tough. They have a very passionate fan base."

He concluded about the Best Player award: "I will dedicate it to my children."
