Simeone: We Suffered Against Barcelona, and This is the Real Atletico
Diego Simeone, the coach of Atlético Madrid, expressed his satisfaction after his team qualified for the Copa del Rey final at the expense of Barcelona, emphasizing the difficulty of the match and the importance of the team's collective effort.
Simeone said in statements after the match: "We knew we were coming to a difficult stadium, a team that plays very well. We couldn't, and they didn't allow us to advance in attack to find more opportunities like those created by Llorente and Lookman."
He continued: "The third goal seemed like an offside. If Barcelona scores from set pieces, it becomes much more difficult."
He added: "They took away the time we needed to play. On our home field, we had that time, and we played more intensely then, which is why we scored four goals. Today was harder, but I leave happy with the great effort and knowing how we struggle. This is part of the competition when you play two matches."
He added: "The changes were to increase the pace; they were a step ahead of us. We couldn't break through the back like Llorente did once, but it was only once. In the first leg, we broke through more. When you attack less against a good team, you suffer more."
Simeone also pointed out the players' performance: "Pedri, Balde, Bernal, they put in a great effort. It was difficult to maintain the intensity of the first half. Gimenez's entry gave us maturity, and we need this maturity within the team."
The Atletico coach concluded his remarks by saying: "I told Flick that they played wonderfully. I hope we meet in the Champions League quarter-finals. I think today I said, this is Atletico."
