Arbeloa: We Will Not Raise the White Flag and Will Miss the Trio Against Celta Vigo
Tuesday 03-03-2026
Álvaro Arbeloa, the coach of Real Madrid, appeared before the media in the press room at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium following the 1-0 loss against Getafe in the 26th round of La Liga.

The coach said, "There are 36 points left, and our only goal is to fight to collect them all. Here, no one will raise the white flag; this is Real Madrid, and no one gives up until the last match. We believe we can reduce the four-point gap, and we will fight and work towards that, starting with the next match in Vigo."

He added: "We created clearer chances than those Getafe had. We could have performed better, but we competed and created more dangerous opportunities than they did. We tried to score from the first minute. Vinicius had a clear chance in the first half, and in the second half, there were opportunities for Rüdiger and Rodrygo. We had several chances and deserved to score, but football doesn't recognize merit. Getafe did a great job as they always do, and we knew the type of match we would face."

He emphasized, "There are 36 points left, and our goal is to collect them all. I know things look bleak after such a loss, but that should be our goal. We have a very tough match in Vigo, and we must win it, then a strong encounter in the Champions League against Manchester City. No one here is giving up on the league. We will fight, knowing there are many things we need to improve. I can't blame the players for their effort, but improving performance is my responsibility."

He added: "We have great players and a strong lineup, and there are players who will return and help us a lot. We must continue to develop and realize that we are capable of delivering the best. Despite everything, we created more chances than Getafe, but they scored a great goal and we did not capitalize on our opportunities."

He continued: "The Osasuna match is different from today's encounter. We faced a team that was defensively organized and closed the spaces well. Perhaps we needed to be more aggressive in the first line, involve more players in the final third, intensify movements, and be more threatening on the flanks. Sometimes we resort to the easier solution by relying on Vinicius, but we must pose a threat from both sides. This is what we need to correct."

He stated: "We have talked a lot about the difficulty of breaking through compact defenses. The match had many stoppages, and the referee allowed a fragmented pace with many tackles. This is not a criticism of Getafe; they do what they are allowed to do. Nevertheless, I believe our chances were enough to score at least one goal, but we still have a lot of room for improvement."

He noted: "I didn't say we are incapable of playing well. We created scoring opportunities and we can play better. I don't blame the players for their effort, as that is the first thing I ask of them. Improving performance is my responsibility, and if there is someone to blame for the defeat, I take it upon myself and will continue working."

Regarding the substitutions: "Dane Hausen was brought on because Alaba felt a slight muscle strain at halftime, and we also wanted more boldness in advancing the defenders. With Carvajal, we sought greater width and aggression on the flanks. Rodrygo is capable of making a difference even in tight spaces."

Regarding Bellingham's performance: "I understand the boos when Thiago was substituted, but I don't take a player out because he's bad. He played a great match with a strong personality, and it didn't seem like it was his first start for Real Madrid. He deserved applause, and I accept the criticism."

Regarding the absences: "When we lose, everyone remembers important players like Bellingham and Mbappe, but we are Real Madrid and I am not looking for excuses. We have enough quality to win."

He concluded regarding Mastantonio's expulsion and the yellow cards received by Hausen and Carreras, which will keep them out of the match against Celta Vigo on Friday: "There are things that shouldn't happen, like Mastantonio's situation. I don't know exactly what he said to the referee, but if he was sent off, there must be a reason. We cannot repeat such actions. Hausen and Carreras' cards were part of the game, but they will deprive us of three important players in the Celta Vigo match, and I don't think they were intentional."
