Mexico Crisis Threatens 2026 World Cup
Monday 23-02-2026
Mexico witnessed serious security developments following the killing of the leader of the drug cartel known as the Jalisco Cartel (CJNG) in a military operation carried out by the Mexican army this morning.

According to preliminary data, the operation followed bloody clashes between government forces and cartel members, resulting in the elimination of the prominent leader known as "El Mencho," in what is considered one of the strongest blows the criminal organization has received in recent years.

Following the announcement of the leader's death, widespread violence erupted in several areas, as gang members blocked main roads, set cars and vehicles on fire, and took control of some vital locations in an attempt to pressure the authorities and retaliate against the military operation.

According to numerous reports, roadblocks have been set up in several states, most notably Jalisco, Michoacán, Colima, Tamaulipas, and Guanajuato, leading to partial paralysis of movement and disruption of services in several cities.

Some local media outlets reported that armed individuals had taken control of the area surrounding Guadalajara International Airport, which led to the temporary suspension or delay of several flights amid a heavy security presence.

In the same context, several countries, including the United States, Canada, and China, announced the suspension of some of their flights to Mexico, along with issuing travel warnings to their citizens, urging them to exercise caution and avoid affected areas.

The reports concluded that the escalation could plunge the country into a prolonged wave of unrest if the government fails to contain the situation quickly. Concerns were also raised about the impact of the crisis on preparations for hosting the 2026 World Cup, which Mexico is set to organize in partnership with the United States and Canada.

It is noted that the global playoff qualifier for the World Cup will be held in Mexico next March.
