Argentina Targets Historic Achievement in the 2026 World Cup

Tuesday 02-06-2026
The Argentina national team enters the 2026 World Cup with great ambitions to retain the title they won in the 2022 edition, aiming to write a new chapter in their history by achieving two consecutive titles in the global tournament.

A report by Reuters indicated that coach Lionel Scaloni has maintained the core structure of the team that led Argentina to global glory in Qatar, before continuing their successes by winning the Copa America 2024, and then finishing the South American qualifiers at the top with a comfortable margin over their competitors.

Despite the technical stability and impressive results, the Argentine team's preparations have not been without some challenges. After the Qatar World Cup, the team did not face any European national teams, and the anticipated match against Spain in the Finalissima was canceled, leaving them to play matches against teams with less international strength.

The Argentina team hopes to become the third team in World Cup history to successfully retain the title, after Italy, which won the 1934 and 1938 editions, and Brazil, which achieved the same feat in the 1958 and 1962 editions.

Scaloni relies on a group of his top stars, led by Lionel Messi, alongside Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez in the forward line, while Rodrigo De Paul, Mac Allister, and Enzo Fernandez provide balance and strength to the midfield. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez continues to lead the defensive system, which includes players with significant international experience.

Argentina begins its tournament journey by facing Algeria on June 17, before meeting Austria and Jordan in Group Ten, a group that seems theoretically suitable for the title holder.

Scaloni affirmed that winning the 2022 World Cup is now part of the past, emphasizing that the team's focus is entirely on the new challenge, with Argentina eager to continue making history and solidifying its place among the greatest teams in football history.
