Refereeing Scandal on the Night of Barcelona's Defeat to Girona
Tuesday 17-02-2026
The match between Barcelona and Girona witnessed a controversial refereeing incident during the 24th round of the Spanish League. The game, held at Montilivi Stadium, ended with Girona winning 2-1.

Barcelona took the lead with a goal by Pau Cubarsi in the 59th minute, before Girona equalized through Thomas Lemar in the 62nd minute. Girona then scored the winning goal in the 86th minute amid protests from Barcelona's players and coaching staff, claiming a foul on Jules Koundé before the goal.

The "Archivo VAR" account on the X platform stated: "The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology disclaimed responsibility for the Girona vs. Barcelona match."

He added: "After the ball bounced off him, Echeverry drove the studs of his shoe into the inside of Koundé's ankle, which constitutes a foul."

The cameras captured the anger of the Catalan team's coaching staff and players after the end of the match, as coach Hans Flick was seen talking to the match referee, Cesar Soto Grado.
