Carrick: Facing Arsenal is a Big Challenge, and This is the Team's Condition
Friday 23-01-2026
Michael Carrick, the manager of Manchester United, spoke in his press conference today about the team's preparations for facing Arsenal in the upcoming Premier League match, after the 2-0 victory over Manchester City.

Carrick said: "There are no injuries, everyone has recovered well after the match, it has been a good week, and we achieved a big result and a great performance with a positive feeling on the field. It's all about balancing the confidence gained from the previous match and maintaining humility. We have another big match coming up, and one match does not make a team great, but it gives us a good foundation to build on. There is great confidence within the group, but we are ready for what's coming."

Regarding Casemiro's departure and its potential impact on other players like Harry Maguire, Carrick said: "We are now at a stage of the season concerning contracts, and of course January is about transfers, so we are reviewing matters and reaching the end of the season concerning contracts and decisions. The announcement about Casemiro was made for clarity, and the decision was made before I arrived. It reflects his character and mental attitude, and his desire to finish the season well. I have already spoken with him, and he is eager to give his best."

He continued: "So far, we haven't gone far in planning for the future. The most important thing for me is that any decision made by anyone in the club should be long-term and not just to finish the season. I have a responsibility to ensure the club is left in a good place and moving forward, and as time passes, I will be part of those decisions."

About De Ligt's condition and the possibility of his return, Carrick said: "He had some delays before I arrived, but he is close to returning, and we expect him back in the next two weeks soon, without specifying an exact date."

Regarding the Arsenal match, he said: "I'm looking forward to the match, it will be a big challenge. Arsenal is a strong team with many strengths in their lineup, and they are in their Champions League position for a good reason. We are in good shape and look forward to a tough match, knowing that winning will not be easy."

About the young player Kobe Mainoo: "I've enjoyed working with him, I've known him since he was young, the club needs young players to be the foundation of the team. Kobe is a great example of that, he has participated in big matches and shown a strong character. His performance was excellent last week, and he played in a way that showed his great quality."

On his experience as a player against Arsenal, he said: "We have our ideas and plans to reach the required level. Arsenal has done an excellent job under Arteta's leadership, and we have what we need to work on to reach what we want."

On using Bryan Mbeumo as a striker compared to Cisco and Zirkzee, he said: "There is a difference in styles, Mbeumo had a free role with Bruno Fernandes to cover different spaces, Zirkzee is good at playing behind the defense and making a difference, and Matheus Cunha came in from the middle and made a difference in the match. We have diverse and effective options."

On Diogo Dalot's performance, he said: "His performance last week was great, despite receiving an early yellow card, he managed to defend excellently. He is very focused and wants to give his best and loves playing for the club. The performance was excellent and allows him to build on that."
