From Doubt to Decisiveness.. Mbappé Shines in Madrid's Sky
Sunday 18-01-2026
The crisis over the Real Madrid coaching position has overshadowed a significant mystery that has not received enough attention: the true condition of Kylian Mbappé's left knee. Since he got injured against Celta Vigo on December 7, an injury later diagnosed as a knee sprain, every appearance of his has raised questions: absences, comebacks, traveling to Saudi Arabia to play only 15 minutes, a controversial rest during the Albacete match, and then, just 72 hours later, he was decisive in breaking the deadlock in yesterday’s game.

Against Levante, Mbappé went from being a major doubt to playing the full 95 minutes, which was remarkable—especially after causing panic at Santiago Bernabéu when he fell to the ground during the warm-up after Hausen stepped on his foot, requiring medical staff intervention.

Amid all this anxiety, Kylian was expected to show physical signs of strain against Levante, but the opposite happened; he was the most active player in the challenging first half for Real Madrid and managed, with a brilliant touch, to ease the intensity of the internal and external chaos the team was experiencing.

Mbappé traveled at the last moment to the Spanish Super Cup to try to save Alonso, and he did the same yesterday to preserve the coach’s standing. After completing his task—winning the penalty against De La and converting it himself into the opening goal (1-0)—he did not ask to be substituted, nor did his coach see the need to rest him in preparation for the upcoming match against Monaco next Tuesday.

The match against Monaco holds a very special significance for Kylian, as the Principality of Monaco witnessed his earliest football beginnings. He scored 27 goals and provided 16 assists in 60 appearances for the French team. It was also there that Real Madrid first set their sights on him. Given this strong emotional connection, it seems unlikely that resting him will be considered, despite the significant physical effort he exerted on Saturday.

Kylian not getting a single minute of rest against Levante brings to mind the full match he previously played in Talavera, which at the time could only be explained by his desire to match Cristiano Ronaldo's record number of goals in a single calendar year (59 goals).

With his goal against Levante, Mbappé became the second fastest player in Real Madrid's history to reach 50 La Liga goals, achieving this in 53 matches. Only his idol, Cristiano Ronaldo, surpassed him by reaching the same milestone in 51 matches.

But who can refuse anything to a star player, especially one who makes such a big impact? Not Xavi, nor Arbeloa, nor any coach. Certainly not in the current Real Madrid.
