Álvaro Arbeloa: If I Tried to Be Mourinho, I Would Fail, and This Is What I Told the Players
Tuesday 13-01-2026
Real Madrid's interim coach Álvaro Arbeloa appeared at a press conference to discuss tomorrow's match against Albacete in the Round of 16 of the Copa del Rey, which will take place at the Carlos Belmonte Stadium.

In his remarks about taking over the team's coaching, the coach said: "It is a special day, like all the days I have spent with Real Madrid. I have spent 20 years at this club, the greatest club in history. I understand the magnitude of the responsibility and I am very enthusiastic."

He added: "We saw in the recent matches, especially in the Spanish Super Cup, the amount of effort exerted. We have players who have won six Champions League titles, and that is quickly forgotten. This is what made Real Madrid the greatest club in history."

Regarding the team's issues: "What I discussed with Xabi will remain between us. I am very excited for my first match; we are giving our all in the cup. I have an exceptional group, and I look forward to getting started. I have spent 20 years here, and I will stay as long as Real Madrid wants me to. This is my home, and that's how I feel."

He added, "I was informed yesterday that Xavi and the club reached an agreement and that they want me to take responsibility. Of course, I spoke with Alonso; everyone knows the friendship between us. I care for him a lot, and he feels the same, and it will always be that way. He wished me good luck, as I would have done for him. Our friendship is above everything. The future will treat him well, and we will always remain together."

About the locker room: "Everyone starts from scratch; it's a new beginning. There's nothing more to it—it's a fresh start for everyone, starting with the Albacete match. All the players have great desire, and they have shown me this enthusiasm."

Regarding his first impression of the team, he said: "I found a group of very enthusiastic players. Despite the intense effort this week, I saw a high level of readiness. They share the same passion I have: to fight for everything and to win."

He continued in his talk about Vinicius's behavior: "I don't put myself in scenarios that haven't happened. I'm only concerned about tomorrow's match. I'm lucky to have Vini, and he is loved by all the fans. We all watched the final; this is the Vini we want to see: the one who enjoys himself, laughs, dances… this is the Vini I want."

About the team he wants to see: "This club means winning, winning, and winning again. This is our DNA. This is how the trophy cabinets got filled. When I was a player, I received these values from the dressing room, which are the most important to me—they are my obsession."

He continued speaking about Bentos's return: "Having Antonio Bentos on the coaching staff is a great honor for me. He has won five UEFA Champions League titles. He will be responsible for this aspect, knows the players well, and has a method that we know is successful at this club. Working with him is a pleasure and a great fortune."

He noted: "I trained under many coaches who had a great impact on my career. I keep the best from each of them, and many of them are legends who have won everything. I hope my career goes at least half as well as theirs. I haven’t spoken with Mourinho, but it was an honor to be coached by him, and he influenced me a lot. I will be Arbeloa; I’m not afraid of failure, but if I tried to be Mourinho, I would fail miserably."

About the club's academy: "It is the best academy in the world. There are players who grew up there. Working with them over the past years has brought me here. They know they have a great opportunity ahead of them, and the first team coach knows them well. They understand the high demands of Real Madrid and know that I rely on them."

Regarding his concept of good play: "Real Madrid has 120 years of history, and it's difficult to satisfy everyone. Here, some have won three Champions League titles. I know where I am, and I understand the level of expectations and what the fans want. Here, the most important thing is to win."

He emphasized: "We still have a full season ahead of us, and we are in a good position in all competitions. What worries me is that everyone is ready, that we get to know each other and work together. The most important thing is the players, that they are happy and enjoy themselves on the field. Carrying this emblem is the best thing that can happen in life. We have the ambition to fight for everything."

He concluded his talk about the ego inside Real Madrid's dressing room: "It doesn't concern me much. We have great players who are wonderful people. No one wants to win titles more than the players themselves. I told them that the best period of my life was playing for Real Madrid, and they should enjoy it. They hold themselves to the highest standards."
