McFarland: We Did Not Deserve to Lose, and I Am Very Excited About What Rossinyol Will Bring
Calum McFarland, the interim coach of Chelsea, spoke in a press statement following the 2-1 loss against Fulham in the 21st round of the English Premier League.
The coach said: "It was a tough match. The red card against Cucurella was a decisive factor that changed our game plan. We handled the situation well except for the first goal. Our reaction was excellent; in the second half, we had many chances and moments."
He added: "I am very happy about Liam Delap's goal; it was expected. Harry Wilson showed great skill inside the penalty area, which decided the match."
Regarding the red card received by Cucurella in front of Wilson: "We need to study what happened to Harry Wilson to understand how he reached that point. Marc Cucurella is a great defender, one of the best defenders in the world."
On whether he believes Chelsea deserved a positive result from the match: "Yes, I think so. Fulham controlled the game often, but we put in a great effort. We had chances for counterattacks. Liam had a big opportunity. Until the last eight minutes, I was confident in our ability to equalize or even win."
About his period as interim coach: "It has been a wonderful experience. I have been coaching since I was 17 years old, so for a long time. Last week was the best experience I have ever had. This is thanks to the players and how they have dealt with us. I am truly lucky to be in this position."
He concluded regarding the new Blues coach: "I spoke with Liam Rossinyol the night before the announcement, yesterday at the training ground, and today as well. I am very excited about what he will add to the team."
