Amorim: We Must Suffer Together, and We Will Enjoy Boxing Day
Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim appeared in press statements after the victory over Newcastle United by one goal to nil, in the eighteenth round of the English Premier League.
The coach said: "We need to suffer together on the pitch. The match was very tough for us. I think we had a good first half, then in the second half we focused on defending and tried to do something with [Matheus] Cunha. We had some chances in the second half through transitions, but it was a good match for us. I have said in many previous matches here that we played well but did not get the three points, and today was the opposite. I think we suffered together and managed to win the match."
He added: "I think we have spent a long time together. There were some difficult moments, and sometimes these moments can bring good things to the team, but it is good to have this feeling of having experienced players to help the youngsters understand that we suffer. It does not matter if you are off the pitch, you can play the match, and I think everyone played the match."
Regarding the lineup change tonight: "In the first half, I felt the only way to find more chances was to rely on the back four with many players inside. Even to keep the ball, because I remember last year's match where we lost in one-on-one situations out wide. We just tried to imagine the match and help the players feel comfortable."
On Patrick Durgo scoring the winning goal: "I placed him in a more forward position, and the responsibility is not the same; he has more freedom to lose the ball, and I think that helped Patrick play better. They just have to understand. Even Manu [Ougarty], I think Manu had a very good match today. They have to understand that you can have a good day and the next day might be worse, and you have to deal with that, train well, and move forward."
On why Mason Mount was substituted in the first half: "He felt something at halftime and wanted to come off, and that is also a good thing. He wanted to play the second half, but we cannot lose more players, and if you are not 100%, Jack [Fletcher] did very well. It is an important moment for any young player. He will hear advice from his father and talk a lot about many things, but he just needs calm and praise because he is truly humble, works hard, and deserves it."
Regarding keeping a clean sheet: "A clean sheet, the back four, so I think I don't need a press conference. I think everything is covered, Kobe Maino is injured, and all the topics, and we can go home to enjoy Boxing Day."
