Starmer Urges Abramovich to Transfer 2.8 Billion Euros to Charity Immediately
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, the former owner of Chelsea Football Club, to expedite the transfer of 2.8 billion euros to charitable organizations, the amount derived from the sale of the London club, emphasizing that any further delay is no longer acceptable.
Starmer explained that the funds have remained frozen since the completion of Chelsea's sale in 2022, emphasizing that the British government sees the necessity of directing them towards humanitarian and charitable purposes, particularly to support the victims of the war in Ukraine, given the worsening humanitarian conditions.
The Prime Minister pointed out that his government is intensifying its legal and political pressures to complete the transfer process, saying, "Time is running out, and these funds must reach their rightful recipients without further delay," referring to the prolonged duration of the procedures and negotiations.
Abramovich had sold Chelsea after British and European sanctions were imposed on him due to the Russian-Ukrainian war, with the proceeds from the sale intended for charitable causes. However, legal disputes over the disbursement mechanism and the beneficiary parties have delayed the implementation of this arrangement until now.
