Allegri: I Would Have Substituted Pulisic Anyway, and We Must Reduce Conceding Goals
Massimiliano Allegri, head coach of AC Milan, made strong statements following his team's 2-2 draw against Sassuolo in the Italian league, where he talked about his players' performance and explained his tactical decisions during the match, foremost among them the substitution of Christian Pulisic, in addition to evaluating the reasons for conceding goals and the overall flow of the game.
Allegri said: "I think we played a good match and attacked positively, but Sassuolo is a dangerous offensive team, and if you don't recover the ball quickly, you are forced to retreat for the entire 90 minutes."
He continued: "We played a good game, but in the end, we were close to losing, and now we must focus on the Italian Super Cup."
The Italian coach added: "The players gave their all regardless of their characteristics, and we are still top of the table, and our main goal is to qualify for the Champions League."
He went on: "We know there is a lot of work ahead of us, and we must reduce conceding goals, but I cannot blame the players for what happened today."
Regarding the substitution of Pulisic, Allegri said: "I was going to do that anyway, Christian joined us after having a fever and then trained, and he performed well for 72 minutes, but at that moment we needed an additional midfielder."
He added: "Loftus-Cheek fulfilled his offensive role, but we lacked defensive solidity, especially in the second goal."
Allegri continued talking about Pulisic, saying: "He played a good match today as he did in Turin, was decisive in the second goal, and had a chance in the final minutes; his performance was remarkable."
The Milan coach also commented on Matteo Gabbia's injury, saying: "We will wait and see; we hope it is not a serious injury. We will know the details tomorrow, but Di Venter and Odugu are ready to participate."
Allegri concluded his remarks by affirming that the draw, despite the frustration, may be beneficial in the long run, saying: "It may seem like we dropped two points today, but in the end, this point might prove important during the season."
