Guardiola: Playing Here Is Very Difficult, and We Are Not Ready to Win the Title
Pep Guardiola, the head coach of Manchester City, spoke in a press conference after the 2-1 win over Real Madrid in the sixth round of the Champions League group stage.
The coach said: "We could have played better, playing here is very difficult, four or five players participated here for the first time. Winning here makes us happy in terms of points, especially since we have 13 points and it is in our hands to finish among the top eight teams. That is the goal, and winning here after the Leverkusen match is good."
He added: "Matheus [Nunes] was good. The full-backs, Ryan Sherki played here for the first time. Niko [O'Reilly] delivered an amazing performance. Jeremy [Doku] helped us a lot in many aspects. We started with a mistake but I expected them to press higher, but they dropped back and we faced difficulties, yet we managed to win."
He continued: "Rodrygo, Vinicius Junior, [Jude] Bellingham, are wonderful players. The speed they have in attack is very dangerous, so you cannot defend high up, you have to be committed in defense. There were some shortcomings but we can improve."
Regarding Erling Haaland, he said: "His numbers speak for themselves. We need to look for him more, and he must be part of the flow of the game. In recent matches, he wasn’t present enough in the play, so we have to find a way to involve him more."
He concluded about whether this win boosts confidence to win the Champions League: "We are not ready yet. We are playing away. In February, we will be better. We have played such matches here before and our performance was better but we lost. The players made a great effort, but we still have a lot to improve."
