Inter Coach Explains the Loss to Liverpool
Wednesday 10-12-2025
Inter coach Christian Kivuo appeared in press statements after the 1-0 loss against Liverpool in the sixth round of the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

The coach said: "A draw was the fair result considering the course of the match. We didn’t have enough energy in the first half and struggled against their intensity, but we found the right key to cause them problems. This happened after we had to make two substitutions, which meant we couldn’t make any more changes in the second half and we suffered from a lack of energy.",

He added: "What this ultimately means is that Inter lost their last Champions League match with a late goal, against Atletico Madrid and Liverpool, and we are now sliding down the standings.

He continued: "The incident happened at the end of the match, the second in the last two Champions League games, and we ended up with nothing again. But we fought hard, tried to give our best, knew how to break their pressure, and pushed until the end. We should have been sharper in some of our choices in the final third, but in the end we were affected by the two forced substitutions.",

Regarding the penalty kick: "The incident had to be discussed, although Kivuo usually does not like to talk about refereeing, because Virtz fell while waving his arms after Bastoni left his shirt, I rarely comment on refereeing decisions. I am talking about sportsmanship and what we should teach people, especially in the Champions League. The referee was in an excellent position to see the whole incident and decided it did not warrant a penalty.",

He continued: "When VAR intervenes, it must understand the dynamics of the match. We must accept the decisions and learn to face injustice, be more cautious about these matters, and focus on the good things we can do.",

He concluded: "Liverpool has been struggling in recent weeks, and after leaving Mohamed Salah at home due to his controversial comments and losing Cody Gakpo, they have also rearranged some of their tactics. We expected their intensity and high pressing, we could have done better, but we started a bit hesitant. We gradually took control, with Gravenberch leaving spaces, and we started finding passing channels during the last twenty minutes of the first half, but after the drop in energy levels, we sat too deep."
