Barcelona Includes Lukeba in Defensive Options

Sunday 07-06-2026
Barcelona continues its moves to strengthen its squad in preparation for the next season, as the club's plans are not limited to signing a new striker, but also include reinforcing the left center-back position, which the sports management sees as one of the positions needing additional support.

The Spanish newspaper 'Mundo Deportivo' reported that the chances of signing Italian defender Alessandro Bastoni have significantly decreased due to Inter Milan's high financial demands, prompting Barcelona to explore other alternatives in the transfer market.

In this context, the 'Daily Arsenal' website indicated that French defender Castello Lukeba, a player for German club Leipzig, has entered the circle of interest for the Catalan club. The source added that Barcelona has made initial contacts with the player's entourage to ascertain the possibility of completing the deal in the coming period.

Lukeba, 23 years old, is also attracting interest from other clubs, most notably Arsenal. However, the report clarified that Barcelona is considered the most serious party so far in tracking the French defender's situation, who is contemplating a new challenge after spending three seasons in the German league.

Lukeba is viewed as a defender possessing qualities that suit coach Hans Flick's style, thanks to his speed in coverage, ability to intercept the ball, and quality in building from the back, elements that give him an advantage in a playing system that relies on an advanced defensive line.

The player is under contract with Leipzig until the summer of 2029, with reports indicating that the release clause in his contract amounts to 80 million euros, a figure that may pose an obstacle for Barcelona, although the player's desire for a change of environment could facilitate any potential negotiations during the transfer market.
