Simeone: We Didn't Capitalize on Opportunities, Most Teams Struggle Away from Home
Diego Simeone, head coach of Atletico Madrid, expressed his frustration following his team's 1-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao at San Mames Stadium, emphasizing that the team paid the price for not capitalizing on opportunities despite the significant balance during much of the match.
In his post-match comments, Simeone said: "Matches against Athletic Bilbao are always similar. In the first half, we had chances with Almada and Julian, and in the second half, the match became more balanced. We had a chance with Alex, and then their goal came, which was a beautiful goal."
The Atletico Madrid coach continued discussing the opponent's dominance: "Perhaps Athletic Bilbao was bolder. Teams tend to be braver on their home ground, and this happens to everyone except the big teams. We had clear chances to score, but in the end, the match fell in their favor."
Regarding his evaluation of his team's performance, Simeone added: "I don't think we were inferior to the opponent. In the second half, there was a lot of balance, but I need to watch the match again."
Simeone also touched on his team's away performance, saying: "Most teams, except the big ones, face problems away from home. This is our third defeat on the road, and we try in every match to be more focused to improve that."
He commented on Alex Berenguer's goal that decided the match: "The play was very fast, and I didn't clearly see what happened or where the mistake was, but it was a great shot and a good play, and what they did was deserved."
