Amourim: The win was within our reach, and this is frustrating
Robin Amourim, the head coach of Manchester United, appeared in a press statement following the 1-1 draw against West Ham United at the conclusion of the 14th round of the English Premier League.
The coach said: "We should have sealed the match when we scored the first goal because the win was within our reach. We knew we needed to defend our lead away from our goal, but in the long ball, Bowen won the first touch, then took the ball to the corner trying to get a corner kick... and they got it, and we should not have conceded a goal from that."
He added: "The overall performance was not perfect. We had good moments, but we lost control during some minutes of the first half, as well as in the second half, especially after scoring the goal. The match was clear for us to win, and we had a chance through Cunha to completely seal it."
Regarding the missed chances, he said: "It is very frustrating... when you look at the match, you find that you were controlling it, yet we did not secure the win."
He continued about defender Heven's exit at halftime: "Of course, it was due to the yellow card. We were trying to apply high pressing and leave one center-back with the striker all the time, and any mistake there meant another yellow card. We also missed Aiden on set pieces, so we need to be smarter in managing the match."
On giving Lisandro Martinez more minutes: "The most important thing is to win matches. We are of course happy for Lisandro's return, but our focus must be only on winning."
He followed up regarding Dalot's first goal at Old Trafford: "Yes, it is a goal... but we drew, so it does not matter."
Regarding the equalizing goal the team conceded: "We made some changes, but that is not an excuse. We know what to do in every situation. The match was in the 83rd minute, and we should have closed it and not conceded a goal."
In conclusion, about the team's situation before entering the new year: "Everything is important. Every match is important. We have to win the next match."
