Oblak Etches His Name in the History of the Spanish League
Jan Oblak has inscribed his name prominently in the annals of football history, after becoming the first goalkeeper in the history of the Spanish League to win six Zamora trophies, surpassing legends of the game such as Víctor Valdés and Ramallets, who topped the list with five wins each.
This achievement embodies the exceptional journey of the Slovenian goalkeeper since his arrival at Atlético Madrid in 2014, where he established himself year after year as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, if not the best in recent years.
Although he did not start his first season at Atlético as the main goalkeeper, Oblak exploded in the 2015-2016 season, when he won the award for the first time with astonishing numbers after conceding only 18 goals in 38 matches, an historic rate of 0.47 goals per game, equaling Liano's record from the 1993-1994 season.
Oblak managed to win the award in the 2016-2017 season, conceding 21 goals in 29 matches (0.72), as well as in the 2017-2018 season where he conceded 22 goals in 37 matches (0.59), and then in the 2018-2019 season when he conceded 27 goals in 37 matches (0.73).
After a one-season break, Oblak returned to claim his fifth Zamora trophy in the 2020-2021 season, the season in which Atlético was crowned league champion, with the Slovenian playing a decisive role by conceding only 25 goals in 38 matches.
The goalkeeper said after receiving the award today at the Spanish newspaper Marca's ceremony: "Thank you all... It is a great honor, but I do not want to stop at number 6, I want to win another one. No one wins the Zamora alone. This title belongs to the whole team, from the defenders to the coach."
