Slot: We Shouldn't Talk About Being at the Top, Manchester City Were Better Than Us
Sunday 09-11-2025
Liverpool's coach Arne Slot appeared in a press statement following the 3-0 loss against Manchester City in the eleventh round of the Premier League.

The coach said, "The first half was very difficult for us. You expect that when you come here – they were pressing us very high, and we struggled a lot in the first half. I was hoping we would finish the first half 1-0. Then came the five or ten minutes that affected the match. Instead of it being 1-1 or 2-1, the first half ended 2-0. It was clear in the first half that they were better than us."

Regarding Van Dijk's disallowed goal: "It's hard for me to express my opinion, but it's clear to me that the decision was wrong. Van Dijk never interfered with the goalkeeper's ability to make a save. Right after the match, someone showed me a goal that the same referee allowed for City against Wolverhampton last season, and it took 13 seconds for the assistant referee to raise the flag. There was clear communication. I believe this decision might have positively impacted us."

He continued discussing the match's events: "Set pieces make a difference – we conceded two goals from them, which explains why we went into halftime trailing 2-0. Even if we had gone into the break down 1-0, we would have been lucky. The decision was impactful, yes, but it's clear that City was the better team in the first half; they controlled the game and were superior to us. We faced many issues in building play from the back, losing the ball early, and they would start playing again."

Regarding the penalty kick: "The only thing I saw was some contact, but after the contact, the player was able to place his foot exactly where he wanted. I’m not sure if there were any major issues. We started the week well and ended it poorly. Honestly, even if that decision hadn't happened, I didn't feel that the match would have been ours today. City was the better team – we need to improve – but I didn't need this match to know that."

He concluded: "I saw a team trying to come back into the game, but that wasn't enough today, and that's clear. Last season, when we were eight points ahead, we never felt that things were settled. We shouldn't talk about being at the top; we need to focus on improving our performance – and that's what needs to happen."
