Courtois Explains Loss to Liverpool
Wednesday 05-11-2025
Real Madrid star Thibaut Courtois appeared in press statements following the 1-0 loss against Liverpool in the fourth round of the Champions League at Anfield.

Courtois said: "I tried to maintain the team's cohesion. I think we made a lot of mistakes in the second half near the penalty area; they are skilled at set pieces, and that's how they scored."

He added: "We defended well. With the ball, we lacked a bit in the final third, we struggled to get there, and then we lost the ball too much. This is something we need to improve. But in the end, we are playing in a very difficult stadium, one of the toughest in the Champions League. It's possible to lose, although that's not what we want."

He continued: "Now we have two matches before Christmas: Olympiacos away, which is a tough match, and then Manchester City at home."

He added: "Some mistakes were unnecessary, and in others, we need to pull back because it's a very dangerous attack; perhaps the mistake that led to the goal was unnecessary, and I don't think it was a foul either; I think he fell to the ground when he saw Bellingham's leg. But it was a good pass and a great goal. The passes weren't completely accurate, and we struggled to keep the ball in the opponent's half; here I think we need to improve our performance against strong teams, especially away from home. We are very good at home, and we can improve our performance away against strong competitors. The difficulty of playing at Anfield."

He stated: "It's a very difficult stadium; you can lose here. We need to improve; perhaps we need to play better, but in the end, matches like this are decided by details, and that's what happened. I think we need to stay calm. We are performing well. After the league matches, we need to win against Olympiacos in the Champions League. It's another tough stadium, and if we win there, we will continue our successful run and be among the top eight teams."

Regarding his save with his leg against Szoboszlai: "You have to cover the spaces, and I saw it was a two-on-one situation with Szoboszlai coming in alone. If I stayed in the goal, it would have been a penalty; it's almost impossible to stop it. I wanted to go towards the midfield, but I didn't want to risk him scoring. So when I saw the pass, I went to close him down. I'm two meters tall, and my arms and legs are long, and it's simply a matter of throwing myself at him with all my strength. It's not a perfect save for a goalkeeper, but it's effective too."
