Mariska: We Needed a Performance Like This, and I Can't Explain It
Chelsea manager Enzo Mariska appeared in a press statement after the victory over Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in the tenth round of the Premier League.
The coach said: "It was a good match, no doubt. Against this team, in this stadium, and at this time when they are performing strongly, we needed a performance like this."
He added: "I think you need to be brave whether with the ball or without it. We defended excellently without the ball, but we also created chances when we had it. Winning makes us very happy, for us and for the fans, because it’s a big derby."
Regarding the difference between the defeat against Sunderland and the victory over Tottenham: "I can't explain it, because I don't have the answer. When I don’t know something, it's better to say I don’t know. When we become more stable, we can get closer to the top."
On Moisés Caicedo's performance: "He is a top-class player. Right now, he and Rodri are the best defensive midfielders in the world."
He added: "Especially in England, leading 1-0 does not mean the match is over. Anything can happen. We could have scored another goal or two, and it would have been more comfortable, but we are happy with the 1-0 win and keeping a clean sheet."
About Wesley Fofana: "Wes is a great defender. Before the match, we were one of the highest scoring teams, but our problem was conceding too many. We need to be more solid if we want to compete for the top positions."
He concluded about the calmness after the defeat against Sunderland: "That’s the first thing I told the players after that match. We moved from 11th to 4th after this win. We need to maintain balance. After the Sunderland match, many said there was a problem, and of course, we have things to improve, but we are on the right track."
