Mariska: Delap is close to returning, and we must continue to improve our performance
The Italian coach Enzo Mariska, the head coach of Chelsea, confirmed his team's readiness to face Sunderland in the eighth round of the Premier League during a press conference held on Friday, ahead of the anticipated match at Stamford Bridge.
Mariska spoke about the injury situation and the return of Liam Delap: "There are no new injuries; Liam Delap participated in training with the team for the first time yesterday, but he will not be ready for tomorrow's match. He is likely to be available for the next match. His return was scheduled for October 25, so he is pretty much on the timeline set."
Regarding working with young players, he confirmed: "I love training young players; it was a special night for the club when many of them participated. They are talented players, and my role is to help them develop day by day. The only way to improve the team is to improve the players themselves."
On dealing with non-participating players, he pointed out: "We have 24 or 25 exceptional players, but not everyone can participate in every match. I rotate players according to the plan and the nature of the match. I know some feel dissatisfied when they miss out, but that is normal in football."
On his assessment of Sunderland, he continued: "Sunderland is a strong and organized team, performing excellently as a unit since the beginning of the season, and they have the same number of points as us in the league, reflecting the quality of their work. There are no easy matches in the Premier League."
Regarding the young striker Mark Guio: "Mark is a classic striker with great physical strength, and he is still very young. He can develop in many aspects, and we work with him daily to achieve that. I spoke to him two weeks ago and told him that I was not satisfied with his training and asked him to change. He responded and improved remarkably."
On the possibility of him starting, he added: "Yes, Guio is fully ready to start matches, but regarding the possibility of loaning him back to Sunderland in January, it is difficult to predict now; we are in October, and everything can change quickly in football."
On the young Brazilian player Estevao: "We are trying to help him adapt, and his teammates Andre Santos and Joao Pedro are providing him with great support as they went through a similar experience. Estevao is a remarkable player; he lives for football and enjoys it, and his family is doing a great job in raising him."
On Enzo Fernandez's behavior with Estevao in front of Ajax, he said: "I was very happy when Enzo gave the ball to Estevao to take the penalty against Ajax. This action shows the spirit of the team and the unity within the group, which is more important than winning itself."
Regarding Chelsea's goals this season, he added: "From day one, our goal has been clear: to work hard daily and to continuously improve. Last season we finished fourth, won the Conference League, and the Club World Cup, and now we continue to work to improve our performance further."
On his personal ambitions, he confirmed: "I am like the players; I always try to analyze, develop, and learn, as this is the only way to achieve success."
