De Zerbi laments Guery's injury

The coach of French club Olympique Marseille, Roberto De Zerbi, expressed his deep sorrow after the injury sustained by Algerian international striker Amine Guery during the recent national team camp, which will keep him off the pitch for a long time.

Guery suffered a severe shoulder injury due to a collision with the Ugandan national team's goalkeeper in the match between the two teams last Tuesday as part of the tenth and final round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The French club announced on Saturday that the player will undergo surgery that will keep him sidelined for at least three months, meaning he will officially miss the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, marking his second consecutive absence from the continental tournament after a knee injury kept him from participating in the 2024 Ivory Coast edition.

In statements reported by the French press, De Zerbi lamented: “I feel sorry for Guery because he is a unique player with exceptional abilities, and he is a young, decent, and committed person.”

The Italian coach also emphasized that he does not blame the Algerian national team for the player's injury, explaining: “I am not angry with the Algerian national team; the injury resulted from a collision, and that is part of football.”

Guery's absence is a significant blow to both Marseille and the Algerian national team, especially since the young striker was highly relied upon in the front line due to his skills and ability to finish attacks effectively.
