The head coach of the French national team, Didier Deschamps, expressed his dissatisfaction with his players' defensive performance after the 2-2 draw against Iceland on Monday evening, in the context of the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

Deschamps said in a press statement, "It's hard to explain what happened. Against a defensively organized team, we lacked rhythm and penetration. We were not at our best, but these matches allow us to see other players and give them playing minutes."

He spoke about the Icelandic equalizer, saying: "The goal came right after a period of pressure from us. Perhaps we were still celebrating our goal. We cannot be breached this easily because we were poorly positioned and did not press the ball carrier as we should. This is unacceptable."

He added about the defensive mistakes: "We cannot concede such a goal. They did not create many chances, just two shots on goal that ended in two goals. These are mistakes that should have been avoided."

He continued: "We collected four points from two matches, and if we could win all the matches, we would have done so. Many players were absent, but those who participated did what they had to do. We now have four points out of six, and the upcoming break will be crucial for qualifying for the World Cup."

Deschamps concluded his remarks by praising player Magnús Aklious: "He is gradually gaining confidence, has high technical quality and a calm personality, and just needs time and repetition to show all his potential. He has been more open in this camp."
