Luis de la Fuente: Pedri is an amazing player, and that doesn't worry me
Spanish national team coach Luis de la Fuente appeared in press statements after the victory over Georgia with a score of 2-0 in the third round of the European qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
He began by discussing the difficulty of selecting the national team list due to the abundance of talent, saying: "It won't be an easy task, but I am proud of this generation. I don't feel worried; the team is filled with great players, and I am lucky to coach this unique group."
He added regarding the missed opportunities in front of the goal: "This is the nature of football. Winning by large margins like 6-0 is not common at the international level. Against Georgia, we faced an organized team and a great goalkeeper, so the result is normal."
De la Fuente also praised Oyarzabal's decision to let his teammate Ferran Torres take the penalty, explaining: "We have more than one player specialized in set pieces. What happened shows the team spirit. They are more than just teammates; they are family. I have great confidence in everyone."
Regarding the physical condition of the players: "Dani Olmo came in good shape, but he felt slight discomfort that developed over the week, and in Friday's training, we confirmed that he wouldn't be ready. So we decided to rest him."
De la Fuente concluded his remarks by praising Pedri and Oyarzabal, saying: "Pedri is an amazing player; it's hard to see him make a mistake. As for Oyarzabal, he is a complete and comprehensive player who understands the game well and reads situations intelligently. I believe he doesn't get the appreciation he deserves, just like Zubimendi, Fabian, Merino, and other players who don't receive enough media spotlight."
