Super League Proposes Changes to the UEFA Champions League
In a move aimed at revolutionizing the format of the UEFA Champions League without compromising its name or prestige, the Super League Association has submitted an official proposal to UEFA that includes a new vision for the continent's most prestigious tournament, expected to be implemented starting in 2027.
According to the Catalan newspaper "Mundo Deportivo", officials from the Super League have conducted intensive negotiations in recent months with UEFA, in the presence of several clubs led by Barcelona and Real Madrid, to make radical changes to the Champions League competition.
Details of the proposed system:
- The tournament will still include 36 clubs qualifying as they currently do through local competitions.
- The clubs will be divided into two groups based on UEFA rankings:
Group One (1–18): includes the top 18 clubs in the ranking, playing 8 matches among themselves, meaning major matchups from the first round like Barcelona vs. Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid vs. Manchester City.
Group Two (19–36): its clubs will play 8 matches through a draw among themselves, making the competition more balanced and giving lower-ranked clubs greater chances to qualify.
Qualification system for the knockout stages:
- The top 8 teams from Group One qualify directly for the Round of 16.
- The remaining spots will be decided through playoff matches between the two groups (the draw system will be determined later).
The goal of the proposal:
To raise the level of competition from the early stages by making every round filled with major matchups while maintaining opportunities for rising clubs to prove themselves and reach the knockout stages.
Broadcasting rights and a new platform:
The tournament will be broadcast on the Super League's UNIFY platform.
It will be available in two versions:
A free version with ads.
A paid version (Premium) without ads.
Name of the tournament:
The name of the tournament will remain the same "UEFA Champions League" while presenting the tournament in a new, more exciting and appealing format for fans around the world.
