Mariska: The Red Card Changed the Course of the Match, and Gifts Shouldn't Be Given in the Premier League
Enzo Mariska, the head coach of Chelsea, expressed his frustration after the 3-1 loss to Brighton at Stamford Bridge in the sixth round of the Premier League, emphasizing that Trevoh Chalobah's red card was the turning point of the match.
Mariska said: "It was a tough loss because we dominated the first half, we didn't give the opponent any chances, we had 70% possession, and everything was going well, but with one mistake and a red card, the plan changed completely. We played two matches, the first before the red card and the second after it."
He added: "You certainly can't keep making these mistakes, as they change the course of matches. After the red card, we tried to adapt, but we had two young center-backs who didn't have enough experience in the Premier League."
He continued: "My message to the players is clear: you can't give away free gifts in the Premier League. We made significant mistakes that completely changed the course of the match."
Regarding the changes he made after the numerical disadvantage, he explained: "The first substitution was Josh coming on for Andre after the red card, then we brought Malo in to help Reece face Minty. The last change was due to Joril requesting to come off because of a muscle strain."
On the entrance of club owners and sporting directors to the dressing room after the match, Mariska confirmed: "This is normal; we have an office inside the dressing room, and after every match, we meet and discuss the details of the match, and there’s nothing different about that."
The Italian coach concluded his statements by affirming that the team must learn quickly to avoid repeating the impactful mistakes that cost Chelsea points in the last two matches.
