Chouameni: This is my opinion on Marseille, and Mbappe wants to win the Champions League
Real Madrid star Aurélien Chouameni appeared at a press conference to discuss tomorrow's match against Marseille in the first round of the Champions League group stage.
The player said: "We have to play with commitment and confidence. We know it will be a very tough match against a strong team, but we have to play at our level to win."
He added: "This tournament has changed a bit. We know that in the end we can play knockout matches and win the Champions League, but we want to win every match, and if we do that, we will qualify directly for the quarter-finals. But the most important thing is tomorrow's match, and we will try to start the tournament in the best possible way."
Regarding refereeing decisions: "The referees do their best in every match, but they make mistakes just like we do on the field. The most important thing is to win, and we did that. I have nothing to say about the referees. Everyone saw what happened. Let's look ahead."
On defensive commitment compared to last year: "With Ancelotti, we won many titles, and he is one of the best coaches in football history. Xabi has a different methodology, but we are improving in every match. We try to do what he wants on the field, and we have to continue in this way to win."
He continued: "How do you want people to evaluate you in France? It's not that they underestimate me; my job is to try to play well to win every match, win titles, and help the team. Perhaps there are those who don't like this, but hard work... I work as I should, and I need to keep working and gaining experience. For me, the most important thing is that my teammates, the coach, and the club are proud of me."
He emphasized: "With Xabi Alonso, we have won matches since the beginning of the season, and all of our performances have improved, both as a team and individually. All players feel comfortable in the team, and I do too. I try to play at my level and help the team as much as possible. We want to win every match this season, and if we play at our level, we have a good chance of achieving that."
He mentioned: "Has the team's mentality changed compared to last year? Clearly, there are changes, but I will not state that to the press. There is a different methodology for the coaches, as well as for the players who play in different positions."
About Marseille: "We need to play a great match because they will definitely create problems for us. They are high-level players, and we need to prove that we are a strong team as well. Marseille is a great team in Ligue 1. They have made many changes, that's true. I expect a tough match; it’s a Champions League match with strong teams, and we have to give our best. I don’t know if all Spaniards know Olympique Marseille. It’s a very popular team in France; it’s a great team. Many players and others have asked me for tickets to watch the match. As a French player and a Real Madrid fan, I am very much looking forward to starting this tournament."
He added: "When we play with Real Madrid, we face pressure all the time. We are not under more pressure this season than last season because we face it every season, and we strive to win every title. We will do our best and aim to win titles because we did not win the same number of titles last year. I hope we can do that this year."
Regarding Kylian Mbappe: "Last year, he scored a lot of goals, and he continues to do so this season. We are also improving as a team. He plays at an amazing level, as he does every season, and we know that with him, we have a better chance of winning every match."
He added: "What are your memories of playing against Olympique Marseille? I definitely remember those matches against them a lot. There is always a feeling of anticipation and tension because the team is very strong at the Velodrome. The atmosphere is great and different. We know we need to deliver a very good match because it will be a very complex and challenging match."
On whether Mbappe is obsessed with winning the Champions League: "He wants to win every possible title. He hasn’t achieved it yet. At Real Madrid, this is also a goal for the club. He wants to win every possible title, and we will try to achieve that together. But first, we need to win tomorrow’s match and be physically and mentally prepared."
He concluded regarding reaching 150 matches with Real Madrid: "It’s a dream. I try to enjoy every match, every training session, and every day here as a Real Madrid fan. I hope to play more matches, win titles, and enjoy every season here."
