Alonso: Barcelona Doesn't Worry Me, This is Our Stance on the Transfer Market
Saturday 23-08-2025
Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso appeared in a press conference to talk about tomorrow's match against Oviedo in the second round of the La Liga competition.

The coach said: "It will certainly be a special match for Oviedo for two reasons: their return to the top division after many years, and now because it is their first match in the league at home, which we will play against them after starting the last match at our home. It is important that we continue to grow away from home. We want to be competitors and present a good level wherever we play. This will be the third week since we started, but we are excited for the match tomorrow."

Regarding Mastantuno's first appearance in the first round, he said: "I saw him well. He had a positive impact and good energy. Since he is on the match list, he has a chance like everyone else to play tomorrow."

On Cazorla, he stated: "I haven't spoken to him; after the last match, I was busy preparing for tomorrow's match. I was focusing on our team more than thinking about social matters. I have a wonderful memory with him, not just as a player but as a teammate as well. At Euro 2008, everyone who was there formed a great dressing room. Now he has a different role, but he has great respect. Football-wise, he is an exceptional player, and I remember well the first impression he left when he joined, and it was great. I am very happy for him, for what he has achieved, because he returned to his home and enjoys being a symbol in Oviedo. Tomorrow I will talk to him."

Regarding Vinicius, he said: "I said that the context of the World Cup is somewhat different. For me, the season started in the last match against Osasuna; we only played one match, so we must handle the statistics with caution. All players are important, and I rely on all of them, and from selecting the list to determining the starting lineup, any player can be important for the team."

On Rodrigo's situation, he mentioned: "For me, the season and my period started now. The Club World Cup was a different context, and the list then was different from the one we were building, and we only played one match. All decisions regarding playing and the lineup are my decisions, and I evaluate them with the coaching staff. We think about what is best for each match. Yes, I talked to many players, and I talked to Rodrigo too."

Regarding Vinicius: "I see him in good shape. We just started the season, we spent only a week preparing for the Osasuna match, and now these days to prepare for the Oviedo match, and not much time has passed. I see him well, and we are at the beginning. Everyone is excited, and we know how important this year is, even though all seasons in Madrid are important. There is a strong desire to have a great season, and everyone is in a good mental state, which is essential."

On set pieces: "We haven't been able to work on them much yet, but we have players of high quality. Arda executes them excellently, as does Trent. Mastantuno is good at executing corners and free kicks as well; even Kylian executed some last season. We haven't fully worked on them yet because there are other matters, but we have many options."

He continued about the transfer market: "I am happy with the squad we have, but we must always be prepared. I don't know what will happen, but I am happy with the squad."

On Mastantuno's position: "I think he can play in several positions; at River, he played a lot as a playmaker, closer to the 10 position, then gradually adapted to the winger position. I believe he has the quality to play in both positions; either deeper or on the last line. He has good movement and the ability to connect with his teammates. He likes to pass and collaborate, not just to do individual dribbles. From any position, a bit higher or lower, he can play, but not as a double pivot. We are thinking of a slightly higher position."

He emphasized: "I think the current system can fit well with Jude Bellingham; we need to adapt. If I thought we wouldn't suffer from injuries throughout the year, that would be naive. We have to live with injuries, as is the case now with Jude, Camavinga, Endrick, and Mendy. They will happen in the future. We cannot think of fixed players; no one will play all the minutes. Everyone will rotate, and there will be minutes for everyone, and each player will have their role. After that, the roles will be distributed more or less."

On the fans' chants for Mastantuno in the Bernabéu: "I focus on the player and see him in good shape. He trains well, and his integration with the team is excellent. He seems as if he has been with us longer than he actually has, and I see him smiling more than having any worries."

He added: "I try to help Mbappé, and for the team to help him, and for him to help the team win matches and feel comfortable. It is about the team, and Kylian is a key part of it, given his weight and influence on the rest. The better the team integrates, the more this will be a key for the season to play as one team with the great players we have, but our main strength should be collectiveness."

Regarding the playing system: "Of course, we talked about it. We talked a lot about the playing style and how we can improve with fewer matches. With the limited information we have, we need to analyze more and see what we can do. I believe we have the right players to play in different systems while maintaining a clear idea and understanding why we do things. We have already used the three-defender system to see how it would be, and we can be flexible because some players are used to playing in other systems and understand them well."

He concluded: "Are you worried that Barcelona is one step ahead of you? Nothing worries me. What worries me is our level and how we are. With every week, we will be better, and with every match, we will improve and grow as a team, and that is what matters to me."
