Liverpool Announces Series of Tribute Actions Following Jota's Death
Liverpool Football Club has announced a series of impactful tribute actions following the death of Portuguese star Diogo Jota, a player for the first team.
The club had previously decided to permanently retire the number 20 jersey worn by Jota across all age groups within the club, in honor of his memory.
Liverpool clarified in an official statement that thousands of physical tributes placed outside Anfield were carefully collected over the past week, with memorial flowers being transformed into compost to be used in flower beds at all club facilities.
Meanwhile, other memorabilia will be recycled by a specialized company to be used in creating a permanent memorial sculpture to be displayed at Anfield.
The statement noted that fans will be able to pay their respects during the team's preparatory matches, both in the Asian tour and in the Anfield matches against Athletic Bilbao on August 4, where players will wear jerseys featuring a special patch that reads Diogo J 20, along with placing bouquets of flowers before the matches.
The club also confirmed that a new shirt will be launched on August 1, featuring the Forever 20 logo in tribute to Jota, which will remain printed on players' shirts and jackets throughout the season.
Liverpool concluded its statement by announcing a major celebration during the first match of the Premier League against Bournemouth on Friday, August 15, at Anfield, which will include a minute of silence and a special mosaic board for fans.
