According to close sources, Rui Costa has invited Real Madrid's management to make a new offer for Carreras, but at the same time, he is facing a growing crisis of confidence within Benfica, after members rejected to support him administratively, which threatens his chances of running for a new term as president of the club despite his wide victory in the 2021 elections.

Costa's hesitation is linked to a previous experience when he refused to sell defender Antonio Silva for 80 million euros, only for his value to drop to 30 million, making him more cautious in making decisions regarding promising talents, chief among them Carreras.
