Fernandes: These Moments Earned Us the Title, Winning for Portugal is Different
Bruno Fernandes, midfielder for the Portugal national team, made statements following the crowning of the UEFA Nations League title after a penalty shootout against Spain, following a 2-2 draw in regular and extra time at the Allianz Arena.
The player said: "Everything we did during the match helped us win. We knew we were facing a great team, and at the same time, we knew we were a team of similar level. We were aware of Spain's quality, and we were very aggressive when losing the ball, which is extremely important, as we were against Germany, because we knew they had very important players on the flanks."
He continued: "Then came individual moments from us, like Nuno [Mendes], our train on the left side, who bulldozed everyone and gave us two moments of great joy with his runs. These individual moments are what give you victory in the match, like Diego Costa's save and the penalty scored by Ruben Neves."
Commenting on what his teammate Ruben Neves said, that Portugal is rarely considered a favorite to win, Bruno said: "We don’t need to be favorites; that’s up to those who say so. There will always be someone who considers one team a favorite and another not. That doesn’t matter much to us. We, the Portuguese, go to win, regardless of who we face. We want to win every match. Sometimes that’s possible, sometimes it’s not. Sometimes we play better, sometimes worse. But we always give our all on the pitch, and we are fully aware that we can beat any team, at any time."
He concluded: "I will celebrate with my teammates, with my family. It’s a special moment for everyone. Winning for Portugal is different. It’s for our family, for our loved ones, for our country and our people. The fans made us feel like we were playing at home. Thank you very much for all the support; it was amazing. We felt it from the beginning to the end, from the moment we arrived until the final whistle."
