Lewandowski Responds to Criticism Over Absence from National Team
Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona striker and captain of the Polish national team, responded to the criticism directed at him after his decision not to participate in his country's national team camp during the current international break, and his absence from Poland's friendlies against Moldova and Finland.
Lewandowski stated in his remarks: "I do not feel obligated to justify my decision, and was the decision right? Yes, at the time I made it, I saw it as the right choice. I believe the players can manage without me; the national team does not depend solely on me."
The Polish star clarified that his decision was not surprising but came after a candid conversation with coach Michal Probierz: "I spoke with the coach and told him that I do not feel physically or mentally well. I was going through a dip in my performance, and I knew that going to the camp would not help me reach the required level."
Lewandowski criticized the media for the way they handled his decision: "People do not have all the information and misinterpret things. With all due respect to journalists, mental fatigue is just as serious as physical fatigue. Who among you really knows how I feel and what is best for me?"
He added: "I realize that my opportunities at this level are starting to diminish, and I know that my decision will not be acceptable to everyone, but there should be respect."
He continued: "One match started with me on the bench, and the questions poured in: Why is he not playing? Then I participated in a less important match and got injured, and they wondered why I played?"
Lewandowski concluded his remarks with a clear message: "I play for the fans who have supported me over the years and for my family. Bearing the responsibility for a country of 40 million is not easy, and sometimes, I also need to rest."
