Newcastle Star Involved in New Betting Scandal
Newcastle United midfielder and Italy international Sandro Tonali is suspected of being involved in a new betting scandal, as he is currently under investigation by Italian authorities.
According to the Italian news agency 'ANSA', Tonali and his international teammate Nicolò Fagioli, a Fiorentina player, are among 12 players suspected of being involved in illegal betting activities.
In an official statement released on Friday morning, the Milan Public Prosecutor's Office announced that five individuals have been placed under house arrest for organizing secret betting platforms from a jewelry store in the city, charged with money laundering related to illegal betting, with €1.5 million confiscated.
Tonali was previously suspended in October 2023 for 10 months due to his involvement in betting on football matches, including games involving AC Milan when he was still a player there, which prevented him from participating in Italy's campaign to defend its title in the European Championship.
The report indicated that prosecutors allege that Tonali and Fagioli received financial rewards for recruiting other players for the secret betting platforms, and other players are also being investigated for charges related to betting on poker games and sporting events.
While other players may face lighter penalties, such as financial fines, the Italian Football Federation has not yet announced any disciplinary actions against them.
