The Iraqi sports community has witnessed widespread controversy and unrest following the leak of details regarding a heated confrontation and confirmed news about Hamrabi player Montazer Al-Majed's apology for representing the national team in the Basra Final friendly tournament scheduled for this month, featuring teams from Lebanon, Iran, and Palestine.

The crisis intensified following the announcement of Iraq head coach Graham Arnold's official squad, which included the name of Al-Majid, revealing heated backstage tensions and sharp disagreements between the player, the coaching staff, and the federation.

Al-Majid has made a stunning revelation through statements he made to Swedish media where he said clearly:

"I am in a difficult position and I do not want to talk about what happened to create sensational headlines, but for now, I will not play for Iraq. I have a disagreement with the Iraqi Football Association and coach Graham Arnold, and I will stay here to focus on my club Hammarby."

In this context, sources close to the Iraqi Football Association revealed new details as Arnold made a phone call to Al-Majid just 24 hours before the squad announcement. During the call, Al-Majid informed the Australian coach that he had previously apologized to a member of the association for not attending due to his desire to focus on his Swedish club.

However, this backlash did not sit well with Arnold, who delivered a stern message to the player, demanding that he clarify his final stance on representing the nation or forget the idea of being called up to the Iraqi squad altogether. Consequently, the coach intentionally included his name in the official list to put him under scrutiny and embarrass him in front of the fans and public opinion by revealing the truth clearly.

The recent developments have sparked widespread outrage and sharp responses from prominent sports figures. Adi Al-Rubaie, a member of the Al-Shorta club administration, stated:

"The harshest penalties must be imposed on Muntadhar Al-Majid for refusing to represent Iraq and to serve as a lesson for others. Those who do not respect the national jersey must receive just punishment because leniency in these matters paves the way for repeated transgressions."

Former international player Salam Hashim said:

"The subject of Montaser Al-Majed has taken on more than its natural size; if he does not have a genuine desire to play, there is no need to pressure him. I would like to tell him that the name Iraq is bigger than you and any player, and the country is rich with talents and stars. I hope to completely close this file and not reopen negotiations with him again by the federation."

This crisis comes to further complicate Majid's 21-year journey with the Lions, as he endures a troubled international experience limited to just 4 appearances since his debut in the summer of 2024, putting his future with the national squad at stake and in jeopardy.
