In a press conference filled with fiery statements and a reshuffling of plans, Graham Arnold, the Australian head coach of the Iraq national team, opened his heart to the sports media at the Iraqi Football Association headquarters, discussing his future with the Lions of Mesopotamia and the reality of his new tactical approach following the Asian Football Confederation's surprising decision to postpone the AFC Asian Cup 2027. He also highlighted his selected squad for the Basra Four-Nation Friendly Tournament.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has openly discussed his initial feelings upon hearing the news of the continental tournament's rescheduling to the following winter, indicating that this adjustment forced him to devise an entirely new strategy.

Arnold said in this regard:

"I felt sad when I woke up in the morning to the news of the change in the date of the AFC Asian Cup because the main goal of the four-nation tournament was to prepare for it, so I changed my mind about some player selections. Now, the selection of players will align with the strategy of the Iraq Football Association and the clear future vision of its president, Younis Mahmoud, for Iraqi football."

He added: "Previously, I promised the fans that we would qualify for the FIFA World Cup, and I kept my promise and achieved that. For me, the postponement of the AFC Asian Cup is more positive than negative, as I had an issue with the timing of the continental tournament because it comes very shortly after the FIFA World Cup. The coach usually does not have enough time to experiment and make changes when the dates are so close together, but after the decision to postpone, we now have enough time and a suitable period to try new names and make the necessary changes."

The coach of the Lions confirmed that he aims to use the Basra Quadrangular Tournament to test new players and inject young blood into the national team, praising the excellent relationship he has with the president of the federation, Younis Mahmoud.

Arnold pointed to the background of some of the technical choices, saying:

"This is the first time I have the opportunity to try new elements, and I will take advantage of the four-nation tournament to test some players I have not called up before. They are young players who are part of the federation's plans for the future. I have previously worked with some of them and know their potential well. Our goal is to develop these players and discover elements capable of serving Iraqi football in the future."

He continued by mentioning specific names on the list:

"I really wanted to see Montadhar Majid with the Iraq national team, and if he refuses to join this time, that will be his decision, not mine. I will also try Ibrahim Bayesh in the right-back position. As for the goalkeeper position, the goalkeeping coach is the one who chose the names on the list, and those were not my personal choices."

Regarding questions from the sports community about his contract, which ends next February after the AFC Asian Cup was postponed, the Australian coach refrained from going into details about the renewal at this time, confirming:

"Regarding my future with the Iraq national team, I do not wish to talk about my contract at the moment because my focus is solely on the Basra Four-Nation Friendly Tournament."

Data indicates that the administrative body of the Iraqi Football Association has set the 18th and 19th of this month to discuss the file and meet with coach Arnold after the conclusion of the four-team tournament to outline the next phase for the Lions of Mesopotamia.
