Montader Madjed refuses to represent Iraq at this time
The Iraqi sports community has witnessed widespread controversy and unrest following the leak of details about the intense clash and confirmed news regarding Montader Madjed's apology for representing the national team in the Final scheduled for this month, featuring the teams of Lebanon, Iran, and Palestine.
The crisis intensified following the announcement of the official list by Iraq's head coach Graham Arnold, which included Montader Madjed's name. It later became clear that there were heated behind-the-scenes issues and sharp disagreements that surfaced between the player, the coaching staff, and the federation.
Montader Madjed has made a stunning revelation through statements he gave to Swedish media, where he said clearly:
"I'm in a difficult position and I don't want to talk about what happened to make headlines, but for now, I won't play for Iraq. I have a disagreement with the Iraqi Federation and coach Graham Arnold, and I will stay here to focus on my club Hammarby."
In this context, sources close to the Iraqi Football Association revealed new details, as Arnold made a phone call to Montader Madjed just 24 hours before the squad announcement. During the call, Madjed informed the Australian coach that he had previously apologized to a member of the association for not attending, as he wished to focus on his Swedish club.
However, this regression did not sit well with Arnold, who delivered a stern message to the player, demanding that he clarify his final stance on representing the nation or forget the idea of being called up to the Iraqi squad altogether. Consequently, the coach intentionally included his name in the official list to put him under scrutiny and embarrass him in front of the fans and public opinion by revealing the truth clearly.
These developments have sparked a wave of outrage and sharp responses from prominent sports figures, as Adi Al-Rubaie, a member of the Al-Shorta club administration, stated:
"The harshest penalties must be imposed on Montader Madjed for refusing to represent Iraq, and to serve as a lesson to others. Those who do not respect the national jersey must face just punishment, as leniency in these matters paves the way for repeated transgressions."
Former international player Salam Hashim said:
"The subject of Montader Madjed has taken on more than its natural size; if he does not have the sincere desire to play, there is no need to pressure him. I would like to tell him that the name Iraq is bigger than you and any player, and the country is rich in talents and stars. I hope to completely close this file and not reopen negotiations with him again by the federation."
This crisis adds to the complications of Montader Madjed's 21-year journey with the Lions, as he has had a troubled international experience limited to just 4 appearances since his debut in the summer of 2024, putting his future with the national squad at risk and in the balance.
