As part of Iraq's ongoing preparations for the upcoming continental challenges, former Lions of Mesopotamia star and participant in the 1986 Mexico World Cup, captain Shakir Mahmoud, made significant statements that included tactical advice and strong messages directed at Australian head coach Graham Arnold. He called for the necessity of opening the national team doors to new faces and outstanding names deserving of representing the country in the upcoming phase.

Shakir Mahmoud, who is currently in charge of coaching the Iraq veterans national team, stated in a press interview that the field monitoring being conducted by the Australian coach of some matches in the Iraqi Premier League is a positive step. He added: "There are players with excellent qualities and high skills in clubs away from the spotlight, and some of them should have been included in the squad during the recent Gulf tournaments."

The former international player highlighted the importance of the upcoming preparatory phase, stating: "I hope my vision reaches the relevant parties in the coaching staff as I see that there are about six players who possess the skills and technical characteristics that align with Arnold's style and philosophy, and it is very important to give them the opportunity to choose and experiment during the upcoming four-nation tournament in Basra."

Mahmoud emphasized the importance of integrating foreign ideas with local expertise, stating: "Here, the pivotal role of the national coach and local analyst consultants emerges in providing comprehensive and accurate reports about these overlooked talents, while leaving the final decision-making freedom to the Australian head coach for selection and suitability."

The former World Cup star has showcased his list of 6 names that he believes would be a qualitative addition to the national squad, with professional Peter Korkis at the forefront. He emphasized that Korkis possesses the qualities of a modern player and levels similar to the successful experience of Mirhas Doski, who proved his worth on the left flank.

Shakir Mahmoud has added more names to the list of professionals and youth, calling for the inclusion of duo Marco Faraj and standout Muntadhar Al-Majid to give them enough space to prove their international abilities.

He completed by referring to the young local pillars in the Premier League, praising the attacking efficiency of Duhok striker Younis Hamoud and the rising performance of Al-Zawraa player Hiran Ahmed, alongside the significant technical value provided by Al-Shorta star Bassam Shakir, confirming that these names represent the true future of the Lions of Mesopotamia.

These technical demands come at a time when the Iraqi national team is preparing to enter a training camp in Basra to participate in the international four-nation tournament featuring strong teams Iran, Lebanon, and Palestine. This will be the most important trial for the coaching staff led by Arnold before finalizing the squad for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. Will the Australian coach heed the advice of Iraqi football legends and give opportunities to these new talents?
