Controversial celebration puts Club Africain players under scrutiny
Club Africain faces controversy following a provocative celebration by players Hamza Khadraoui and Ghaith Zaâlouni after scoring the team's second goal against Club Athlétique Bizertin during the match between the two teams last Thursday in the sixth round of the Tunisian league.
Club Africain secured a 3-2 victory at the Rades Olympic Stadium, thanks to a brace from Hamza Khadraoui and a goal from Rayan Jbali. However, Club Athlétique Bizertin managed to score two goals during the second half and nearly equalized in the closing minutes of the match.
The details of the incident date back to the 30th minute, when Al-Khadrawi and Al-Za'louni celebrated in a manner that mimicked smoking cigarettes; Al-Za'louni appeared to light a cigarette for his teammate, before the latter pretended to exhale smoke upwards, in a scene that provoked widespread reactions among fans and observers.
The two players faced criticism on social media, as many followers believed that this behavior, even if it was theatrical, does not present a suitable image for young players, especially in front of children who look up to football stars as role models.
In contrast, some observers noted that the celebration was not unethical, but they pointed out that the way they appeared was inappropriate, considering their status as players followed by the public.
Amid ongoing controversy, reports have emerged that the Professional Football League office has issued a summons to Al-Khadrawi and Al-Za'louni to appear before it next week and provide their statements regarding the incident.
However, a source from Club Africain denied that the club's management received any letter or summons up until Saturday, confirming that the club sees no reason to exaggerate the incident and that its focus is currently on preparing for the upcoming challenge in the league.
According to media reports, Club Africain is not showing much interest in the speculation regarding the potential referral of its players to the disciplinary committee, considering that the celebration was spontaneous and that it was interpreted in a way that exceeded what the two players intended, who did not mean to present themselves as a bad example for young and emerging players.
Reports suggest that the two players may have rushed their choice of celebration, but emphasized that the reactions have given the incident more attention than it deserves. The club will retain its right to defend its players, with the possibility of addressing the matter internally and speaking with them if necessary.
