Arsenal lose appeal against Max Dowman red card, player to miss 3 matches
The Football Association has rejected the appeal submitted by Arsenal to overturn the red card received by their young player Max Dowman, as well as the challenge against the punishment that follows. An independent regulatory committee decided to reject the club's requests regarding the decision and the penalty. The FA confirmed that the 16-year-old player will be suspended for three matches, with the written reasons for the committee's decision to be published later.
The incident dates back to Arsenal's match against Fleetwood Town on Tuesday, October 27, in the fourth round of the EFL Cup. Dowman received a direct red card in the 85th minute after kicking Harrison Neil in response to a strong challenge from the Fleetwood player, an incident that referee Michael Salisbury deemed violent conduct. Arsenal had appealed the validity of the red card and sought to have the suspension overturned or reduced, but the independent panel rejected both appeals.
The red card came during a match that ended in a 1-1 draw after normal time, before Arsenal lost to Fleetwood Town, a team in League Two, 5-3 on penalties, marking a significant upset. Arsenal had equalized through Viktor Gyökeres after Fleetwood took the lead with a goal from Aaron Loupalo-Bi, but the London side could not secure qualification before their task became more complicated following Max Dowman's red card.
According to the decision, Max Dowman will miss Arsenal's matches against Liverpool on November 1, Hull City on November 7, and Newcastle on November 21, with a potential return date for domestic competitions against Manchester City on November 29.
