Tebas apologises to China over Mbappé comments
Javier Tebas, the president of LaLiga, has apologized to the Chinese people over the controversy sparked by Kylian Mbappé, the Real Madrid star, regarding his remarks about the mocking images comparing him to former Chinese leader Mao Zedong, according to the Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo."
This move comes after Kylian Mbappé's comments caused discontent in China, following his statement that one of the humorous images that makes him laugh is one where his face is superimposed on that of a Chinese dictator. The Spanish newspaper noted that the Chinese authorities decided to suspend the broadcast of LaLiga matches on official television, prompting Tebas to issue an apology via his account on the platform "X".
Tebas said: "LaLiga expresses its deep regret for Kylian Mbappé's statements that caused displeasure and offense in China. We understand the damage that has occurred, and I would like, on behalf of the league, to offer my sincere apologies to the Chinese people."
The president of the league added that LaLiga has built over many years relationships based on respect, trust, and cooperation with China and its authorities, sports institutions, and broadcasting partners, alongside millions of fans of Spanish football.
Javier Tebas emphasized his refusal to allow individual actions to affect these relationships or harm more than 20 clubs participating in Spanish professional competitions, as well as millions of Chinese fans. He pointed out that the league recognizes the importance of maintaining this partnership.
The president of LaLiga confirmed that the league is taking the available measures and is working directly with its partners and relevant authorities in China to overcome the crisis. He added that its commitment to China, its people, and its institutions is strong, and that a relationship built over many years should not be harmed due to an individual incident.
